Green, green green ... Necropolis, Glasgow Green, Pollokshields East

Glasgow, the City of Merchants. Trading  - tobaco and slaves - made Glasgow big. And big are the monuments you find on the Necropolis in Glasgow. It's only a 10 Minute walk from George Square and you have the nicest views over the city.

The grass is so impressive. Houseowners in Vienna work their hardest and never end up with lawns like these. Simply perfect. Maybe it's because you in Glasgow cut the grass at a time where we would say the grass looks as if it has just received a trim.

Back on the Necropolis. The stones have a story to tell. In Glasgow 1880, it was not unlikely to die at an early age, not reaching the 6th birthday. But once you've survived you early childhood, a long live layd ahead of you. (many lived a surprisingly long life and died in their 80's! And we are speaking 19th century!)

Lebensjahrzehnt. Und das im 19. Jahrhundert!
 Yay, Scotland.
 And Discipline!
 Heavy monuments ...
 ... lined up

In my teenage years I used to love to visit graveyards. Simple but yet pure styles of architecture can be found at graveyards.
My mother thought she better be worrying what's wrong with me. She even thought I was depressed. I always thought visiting graveyards is perfectly fine. I loved taking photos. The grey stones and green gras always create a nice contrast.
Now that I have listened to the Hop-on-off-Bus in Glasgow (they recomment the Necropolis on the tour) I have the confirmation: graveyards are places to be seen!

 Idyllic views

This one looks a wee bit better. Probably not much longer ...
Not far from the Necropolis you find the Glasgow Green. The place where people were aloud to bring their wet laundry and lay it out to dry and the cows and sheep were allowed to graze on the common grounds. They still are common grounds today.

I had to come back the next day to visit the People's Palace. Museums close at 5pm. I am not used to such early closing hours. Anyway, wonderful space. Free admission.

Egal. Ein wunderbarer Ort. Bei freiem Eintritt.
This is Pollokshields East Station with the Tramway Gallery in the background:
My bed and breakfast was in this area. I liked it a lot. I don't care if it looks untidy. And I felt and was save on my own, 24/7.

On the way to the station you get to see shopwindows like this one.

Below you see the Backyard of the gallery in the back as seen in the photo above. They have a hidden garden where people exchange and buy plants for their gardens. Sooo nice! Not to forget: Free admission here as well.

You see, Glasgow is not just about construction sites but comes with many facets. I hope you enjoy the trip.More to come!
Please excuse spelling mistakes. Thank you!

PS: Those who know me - online or IRL - might know why I am so busy posting these days: the Vienna Design Week is coming closer and I really wish to be through with my summer-vacation by then. Because then a lot of photos will be made, from a very different world.

When Fashion Becomes Too Serious

I grew up with the credo "Fashion is fun", otherwise why bother? But looking at the images for the press from this year's FashionCamp in Vienna (that's where fashion-bloggers meet), I have a feeling something has taken a wrong course in Vienna. Why so uptight? Cheer up folks!
The last time I saw faces like these was when the news reported about Lady Di's fatal car accident.  Phewwwww ....

Warum so verkrampft? Locker bleiben!

Highland Games in Birnam 2012

Due to a software that chooses to crash permanently instead of operating, I switch to movies for the moment. We leave Glasgow and go up north, passing Perth and arrive in Dunkeld Birnam, where the Highland Games took place end of August. Can you sense the excitement in the air?! ;-) Especially around the solo piper? (2nd video)
And as you can hear in the first video: the commentor was charming, don't you agree?

I had to see some kilts and listen to bagpipes. I just had to. The Games are the best place to still that hunger. And Birnam is the perfect place for a hands-on experience. The mud lands in your face when the runners make their rounds on the field. Yes, you are that close! Not like in Braemar where you are banned on seats in the back.

Ja, so nahe dran!

There were several huts with various jurors and different musical themes.

This video was taken by another visitor! Mine have "warmer" colours :-)
This jury had a tough job. They listened to nothing but funeral marches and similar joyful tunes - for hours! The solo piper played for almost an hour. At least it felt like forever. Which equals an hour in solo piping. And those slow moves. Very stressful job for the jurors!

Was einer Stunde in Dudelsackspielen entspricht.

I like the relaxed atmosphere and see what's going on in the background. You can hear the "clonc"
Mir gefällt die entspannte Atmosphäre. Achtet auf den Hintergrund! Man hört das "klonk"

Going to bed that evening, I still had the bagpipes in my ears. How the jurors must have felt after those hours of attentive listening. What amazes me the most: returning to Glasgow after three weeks, I swear I could tell those solo pipers in the streets of Glasgow where just a rip-off, they are not much more but a poor tourist-attraction ... me still having those immaculate solopipers in my ears ...
In case you like to know it all: all travel is by public transportation only. Going to Dunkeld, coming from Glasgow or Edinburgh is easy.

Glasgow under Construction

Inside Glasgow Central Station /Am Bahnhof Glasgow Central
This is the train that took me from my Bed and Breakfast to the city centre. Just 1 stop, 5 minutes. I like the sign in the window of the train, top left. It's nice, arriving at a trainstation, especially when it is Glasgow Central, just like the locals!

Dieser Zug brachte mich vom Bed and Breakfast ins Zentrum.
Impressive roof construction /Beeindruckende Dachkonstruktion

I imagine the locomotives filling the big hall with steam and smoke 100 years ago. Today the trains run on Diesel and not electricity. Almost exotic!

Direkt exotisch.

How it used to be: tiles and black, often accompanied by glossy wall paint.
You don't have to search for sites under construction, they are almost everywhere. At least around the old cathedral, former university district. As a consequence you see a lot of architecture firms.

How nice, a wedding around the corner! (obvious a snapshot)
The most interesting connection-heads I have ever seen. They look like mushrooms.
Sometimes the cladding site (bottom) ressembles the final structure

The pictures capture the "red side" of Glasgow quite well. (You remember the last posting on red sandstone) There are other sides of Glasgow to come - the greener side as well as the grey side. More to come!

Built on Red Sandstone: Glasgow

Hello! Hallo!

Here come the first impressions: Glasgow. Glasgow was built on red sandstone. Not entirely, but in large scale, it dominates the first impression of the city when you get there.

 The sandstone is melting away...
Der Sandstein zerbröselt ...
Many streets are really, really steep:
Viele Straßen in Glasgow sind wirklich steil
While looking at interesting conversions one must mind the holes in the pavement. You can trip easily while staring in the air. Especially when the streets are steep like the ones in Glasgow.
Here you can see an old building made of sandstone. The red colour and the somehow rigid Victorian style was something I had to get used to. By the time I left Glasgow (after 3 days) we made friends.

I admit, this is not fair: looking for the desperate corners and showing them here. But it is a fact: the ugliest corners exist right behind the most impressive expensive shopping malls. This is different from Vienna where everything turns sparkly and shiny once a quarter gets a facelift.

This sign is total understatement, don't you agree? Small like a brick:
Dieses Namensschild ist Understatement pur. So klein wie ein Ziegelstein.
Yessss, the holes in the streets. I like the windows in the back.
Does not need any further explanation.
Bedarf keiner Erklärung.
... and so we continued our trip and enjoyed many afternoon teas all throughout the country.

I am aware that these photos - except the last two - don't quite ressemble tourist-photos one might expect to see, when someone returns from Scotland. I mean what impression did you get? You don't really get the full picture. But it seems that's how I like to look at cities, with a closer look. What I like to do: take a closer look. Even when I am strolling through the streets with nothing but a wide angle-lens.

Was ich halt gerne mache: Genauer hinsehen.

OFF TOPIC:
Please tell me: is this a good or a bad thing, going bilangual? I am undecided - how much the bilangual text disturbs the flow. I would like to place one text - either the German or the English version - at the bottom of the posting. But by that the text would lack the context of the photos. Tricky ... what do you think, how should I handle the languages?

Cheers,
Paula

Three Cheers for Scotland

I've decided to continue this blog in German and English. For the German version please scroll down.

Hello!
I returned from a wonderful experience - 3 weeks in Scotland turned out to be that sort of adventure I really enjoy. But all the photos are still stuck on the harddrive (the software does not want to get going). So meanwhile I can only post these photos, taken at the river Clyde. This was were my trip started, before going up north and west to the very far Butt of Lewis. Met so many lovely people. Three cheers to Scotland!

Hallo!

Paula
