In Your Face!

Downtown Vienna is undergoing some changes. Traditional stores have gone out of business, due to astronomical rents only flagshipsstores can afford. And a property-shark in Vienna is selling apartments in the centre of Vienna.

We read the slogan and think 'WTF?!'

Viennese are obviously not part of the target group, just look at the Timoschenko-braids the model wears. Those future aparments are built to be owned and not inhabitated, are the next piece of the puzzle called "Golden Mile" (yes, that's how the media names the new old quarter in the first district). This does not please me, nor does it amuse any of my Viennese friends.  It somehow just annoys us.

When property-sharks and Russian investors (one leads to the other) take over the scene, I become nostalgic and wish for the old days, back then when facades where dirty and grey and shops missed the bling-bling, but the apartments behind the facades were inhabitated and shop owners where actual shop owners and not brand-sales-managers.

On Days Like These ...

... I am really glad to know a waterproof watch on my wrist. I almost went for a water resistant watch (Glashütte Nomos), but luckily I have friends at my hand who know me very well and listend to them saying my livestyle is active and sometimes wet. Waterproof is what I need. Water resistant and beige velour (Nomos) is not what I need. They were right!

Sorry to all you ebay-fake-sellers and copycats out there! teheh.  ;-)
I know when to watermark a photo
.
Yesterday we earned at least a bottle of wine from my parent's cellar by kärchering their basement after all the rain.
Did I already tell you, how the weather mocks us with the sun shining like there has been no Kärcher-incident in the basement a few hours earlier at all?
Well, this picture does not show my computer's desktop-background,
(the hue and chroma gets quite close, no?) but today's sky.

I really hope the time-to time German-written-postings don't annoy you. If so, please let me know! I would find a way to make it work out. Lets say a spin-off-blog, f.e. "Paulas Tagebuch", ohne Deppen-Apostroph for sure :-D.

Have a nice weekend, can't believe it's already Friday!

Apropos: heute, arte, Die Kennedys.

Lilac, with a Hint of Purple

Due to heavy rain I am unable to operate my camera. You find me where the lilac turns purple (enlarge the picture). Today even those who were not riding a bike, have been swearing and cursing by the time they arrived at the office. And now - guess what. The sun is out, acting like there has been no rain-incident at all just a few hours earlier today?
Har Har. Very funny.

Paula, not amused. I really wish I could bring my camera with me without the constant fear of ruining it in the multiple rain-incidents we experience around here every day. Maybe it's time to switch to indoor-photography. Cookies in the oven, nail design and bottles of shampoo on the bathroom shelf?

PS: No, I am not giving in. No Label such as "rain" will make it to Paula's Diary.

Summer, Behave!

Summer has been around for a month and as you can see: it does not behave at all.
No fog, but heavy rain that obscures the sky at 5.30pm

5.30pm would be the time you enjoy an after-work drink, sitting somewhere outside. Not when summer behaves like this:
It is amazing, how dark a sky can turn at 5.30. I mean that's the time of the day, where you can catch a sunburn!

The rain water downpipe could not handle the water masses, some sponanteous fountains started to pour water all over the place. Well, it did not really matter, since there was water everywhere:
The most ridicule fact about this mis-behaving summer is its flightiness, because one hour later, the rain is gone, skies are blue, as if nothing had ever happened.

Well, nice plan, but see the traces, no way you could behave as if nothing has happened, see how the footpaths in the park have been flushed out of the park:
In case this posting might sound a bit insane, I probably am a bit insane at the moment. Too many "ES SCHÜTTET"-text messages in 48hrs (received and sent) make me lose my cool.

Anyhow, enjoy your weekend!
Mine is going to continue with some yellow thai curry.

Soundtrack zum Wochenende

Scan: Torteneinpackpapier vom Demel.

Mir geht's gut.

Schönes Wochenende!

Minimal Fitness

All I need are these two tools and a pair of Mizuno running shoes to stay fit. I really like the idea of a minimal fitness concept.
After the run I lay down, exercise with the barbell (Hantel!) (f.e. pull it over ny head) and late stand on the wobbly cushion with both feet and workout with the barbell. And then I stand on one foot and try to keep the balance. It is simple and really effective. And I can take it almost everywhere. The photo was taken in my parent's apartment, where we stay over the summer, while they are on vacation. The whole concept is build around my back, to strengthen my back and keep it in a good condition.

This minimal fitness studio saves me approx 85 EUR / month, because that's how much a studio would cost. Oh, and those contracts, that make you pay for 6 more months even though you already cancelled your membership. Outch, no good memories at all!

Both tools - the barbell and the wobbly cushion have been recommended by my physiotherapist. Things that work are the best! And you can believe me, any physiotherapists have recommended a lot of things. To name the most pointless toos: 0,5kg barbells.

Have a nice day, whereever you find that personal 'minimal dose' in your lifestyle, I am almost certain you are going to enjoy it.

You can be sure, I am creative enough to find ways to spend those extra Euros I save like this on a monthly basis. Lets call it "cut and colour" or "hair and roots".

Ways to Work - Part III

After Ways to Work - Part I and Ways to Work - Part II, it's for a third route. This time I am heading passing the districts 13, 12, 15, 6 and 7, along the Wienfluss, crossing 3 bridges:
This used to be the emperor's private station at the end of the platform. How cools is that :-)

Tourists already lining up at Schönbrunn

What happened to our summer? Why is there still so much going on in the city? When is the city going to quieten down?

If I look hard, I can sense a sense of Hamburg while riding this bicycle lane, imagining the Alster behind those bushes:

The green diminishes and gray takes over:

I stopped at our apartment and emptied our apartment's mailbox. Look what I found in front of our building: the perfect reason not to wake up at home these days:
Those longer-than-usual bicycle-rides that I have been taking over tha past two weeks plus some extra evening runs visibly pay off: my watch-wrist is getting quite loose. Like!

It's wednesday and I am already looking forward to my favourite weekend-activity – besides jogging –  tree- and bee-watching!

Varying Realities

Vienna is a city with many faces.

Top: construction site Lindengasse 60, a temporary occupy-lot, downtown. The new building to come is going to be quite boring compared to the former industrial lofts that had been demolished.

Bottom: backyards at the Wiener Werkbundsiedlung, suburbia. Tiny houses, small gardens, so to say the ultimate housing experience for many.

Gelebte Klischees

So was tut Mann Frau nicht an.

Gigantic Grass

Finally we are complete: the plants moved from the city to suburbia, impressive appearance.
Our window boxes in the city are always dedicated to natural themes, whilst my parent's plants at the balcony in suburbia represent a sort of 'tamed nature'.

At first I did not like the red grass my brother-in-law had chosen for our window boxes at all. Because it was so ... red! And we wanted something green in front of our windows. But now that the heads wave in the slightest wind, I am more than happy with his choice.

Have a nice weekend!

Changes

No big changes, but some remarkable changes for me – this is the first year in over a decade where I don't follow the Tour de France at all. Not even checking out those live-tickers online. Nothing.

During our staycation at my parent's place we used to watch TV a lot. I have not held the remote-controll in my hand for a single time over the past days. I also hardly ever listen to radio-programmes, something that is very unlike me. It seems I am taking media-break these days. Except for my good old friend, the internet, of course! And then there is music: I've bought my first CD in AGES: David Gray White Ladder. I wonder if he was aware how many gems he put on that single album.

Old-School Hair-Salons Challenge Me

Don't get me wrong – not that I mind traditions – but it feels akward, not being able to schedule an appointment at my hair-salon because my hair-stylist is doing his business old-school, which means business-hours from Tue-Fri only.  Three days can be really long. Sat. Sun, Mon ...

Rural Culture

The Regionale XII is an art- and culture-festival that takes place in a very rural region in Austria. Many people leave the region and move to the major cities. The chairs on the tree symbolise the number of people who have left the rather small city called Murau.

I like the atmosphere around the festival, after two days you meet familiar faces on the various spots, everyone is moving around in the region and enjoying their time.

The pictures were in Murau and St.Lambrecht.
The Regionale XII ends July 22 2012.

Highly recommended!
