Glasgow: Walking to Scotland St School

I've noticed how much I enjoy reading your latest postings, so I thought why not provide you with some new stories, too? On with Scotland. And a PS beforehand: Do you notice ... Yes, no rain! :-)

Mir ist aufgefallen, wie gerne ich euren neuesten Postings lese, also dachte ich mir, warum nicht für ein wenig Nachschub sorgen? Es geht weiter in Schottlan. Und ein PS vorab: fällt euch etwas auf? Ja, kein Regen! :-)

During my stay in Glasgow I planned a visit at the Scotland Street School museum, a school Charles Rennie Mackintosh had built in the early 20th century. I was free during the day, so I decided to take my time and walk all the way, since that how you really get to know a city: by walking. The walk from Pollockshields East to Scotland Street, which is south of the River Clide, must have been very different in the past, compared to the surroundings of the school you find today. Many of the former buidling are gone.

Während meines Aufenthalts in Glasgow plante ich einen Besuch bei der Scotland Street Schule, heute als Museum geführt, zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts von Charles Rennie Mackintosh geplant. Da ich kaum verplant war, nahm ich mir die Zeit und ging von Pollockshields East zur Scotland Street, südlich des River Clyde. Das ist meine bevorzugte Art der Fortbewegung, wenn ich eine Stadt wirklich kennenlernen möchte: zu Fuß. Die Gegend muss sich sehr unterschieden haben von dem wie sie heute aussieht, damals, als die Kinder dort zur Schule gingen. Zahlreiche der früher existierenden Gebäude sind verschwunden.

The M8 was something like a promise for a better future. The M8 right in the middle of the city. And that's what the planners, politicians and opinionleaders thought back then, when they led the motorway through the city centre of Glasgow. These were the 1970's. As a consequence the neighbourhoods changed dramatically and vastness rules today where children used to live (there was a reason, why the school was built on Scotland Street - because this was where families used to live). The ending of the ship-industry also changed the neighbourhood. I am curious to see if and how the southbank of the River Clyde will develop in the future. Must be a difficult task for anyone who dares to touch it.

Die M8 war der Schlüssel zur Zukunft. Die M8 mitten im Zentrum der Stadt. Zumindest dachten den Planer, Politiker und Meinungsmacher so, als sie die Autobahn mitten durchs Stadtzentrum führten. Das waren die 1970er Jahre. In der Folge verwaisten die Viertel und wo zuvor Kinder spielten, ist heute Ödnis. Das Ende der Schiffswerften in Glasgow tat seinen Teil zum Aussterben der Wohnviertel südlich des Flusses. Ich bin gespannt, wie sich diese Gegend von Glasgow in der Zukunft entwickeln wid. Es muss eine schier unbewältigbare Aufgabe sein für die Person, die sich traut das Thema anzupacken.

Streets in Scotland seem to be generally quite rippledm which isn't a problem at 10mph. But when speeding up, whew!

Die Straßen in Schottland scheinen durchgehend sehr wellig zu sein. Bei 10mph ist das nicht weiter schlimm. Wenn es aber schneller wird, huiuui

 Finally, the school!
I have to admit, I did not feel to save on my way to the museum, walking through deserted outskirts of the city in the middle of the city.

Endlich, die Schule! Ich muss gestehen, ich fühlte mich nicht sehr sicher auf meinem Spazierweg zum Museum, der mich durch die entlegene Gegenden mitten in der Stadt führte.

 Somehow I still can't see the future of a city in cars and their structures.

Irgendwie fällt es mir noch immer schwer, die Zukunft der Stadt in Autos und deren Strukturen zu sehen.

I would love to hear your opinion on the bilangual postings. Does it annoy you? Would you prefer it written in one language only and leave the 2nd language to google translate?
Of course I would also love to read your opinion on the contents of this posting. :-)

My oveall impression of this region of the city is that this part of the city does not suit the human scalem which is a pity, thinking of the life that used to fill the former harbour district in the past.

Eure Meinung zum Inhalt interessiert mich natürlich auch sehr!

Mein Gesamteindruck von diesem Teil der Stadt war, das die Stadt hier in keiner Weise dem menschlichen Maßstab entspricht, was sehr schade ist! Bedenkt man, dass es sich hier um ein früheres Hafenviertel handelt, wo das Leben in den Straßen pulsierte.
